Krystal Crittendon for Mayor - Broadcast video

Thursday Bert's Marketplace in Eastern Market was packed with hundreds of supporters of Krystal Crittendon as she made a public announcement that she is running for Mayor of Detroit in 2013.

The members of Free Detroit No Consent are strong supporters and believe of those candidates announced for the 2013 election she would make an excellent mayor.

Crittendon for Mayor has Public Support

Grassroots organizations from all neighborhoods of Detroit rallied together. The public was well-represented as we saw people from all walks of life and areas of Detroit at Bert's Marketplace. It was a night of celebration as we brought forward a candidate of solid character, who has worked on the right side of the law looking out for the city as a whole.

Broadcast Video of Krystal Crittendon

Her announcement of candidacy for Mayor of Detroit in 2013.

One of the key remarks Ms Crittendon has made on radio and in her announcement was "Detroit does not need an emergency manager. Detroit needs to manage its emergency." The emergency apparent is one declared through a review team brought together by the Bing administration and State of Michigan. That review team was taken to court and a ruling came forward that they did not have to abide by the Open Meetings Act. So who reviews the work of this group to ensure it follows the law of the city - Corporation Counsel.

Additional video clips from the event can be found through the #Crittendon tag on Bambuser or Twitter.

TODAY! Let your voice be heard! #HantzOff #LandJustice #CommunityLandTrust

Community Trust: Our Communities Are Up to Us!
LEAP does not speak for us.

We, the Community Trust, are a coalition of organizations that have done sustained, substantial work on the east side of Detroit for many decades.

We have established youth programs, worked on anti violence efforts, organized business initiatives, encouraged economic innovation, established gardens, reclaimed homes, planted trees, developed new models of education, and supported artistic and creative activities.

Like all Detroiters, we have contributed to the support of public lands, and we have all suffered from their neglect.

We Believe

Public lands are a public trust.

Public land should be used to further community health, welfare, beauty, independence, and interconnection.

Community Land Trusts are the best path for us to take for the future development of our city.

What We Want
The City Council should actively pursue policies, projects, and programs that support community based initiatives that foster self- sufficiency, community ties, and sustainable ways of living.

The City Council should develop a specific process for Community Based Agreements for all development projects effecting neighborhoods.

The City Council should explore Community Land Trusts as a way to protect public lands.

The Council should reject the proposed deal with Hantz Farms/Woodlands. The sale of public land to a single individual violates the public trust.

The Council should understand Our Community is more than LEAP.
The Lower East Side Action Plan (LEAP) does not speak for us.

They have no right to claim they speak for the whole community.

Their so-called community agreement is illegitimate. It is not a Community Benefit Agreement. It was not publicly negotiated through a broadly based, inclusive process. It is the product of discussion between Hantz Farms/Woodlands and LEAP leadership.

Community Land Trust Before Land Grab Summit

There will be an early-bird special on December 10 at 5pm, one hour before the Public Hearing regarding Hantz Woodlands. The greater Detroit community is welcome to have a conversation about Community Land Trusts. It is a progressive topic that aims to ensure the community has power over the land around them. Bring a friend and come early.

Detroit Urban Agriculture Ordinance

This evening starting at 5:45pm Kathryn Underwood from Detroit's Planning Commission will be conducting a public meeting regarding the Urban Agriculture Ordinance [ click for a draft ]. Pressure is coming from the Hantz Farms/Woodlands deal as to what the statute will allow them to do and how to go about getting there. There will be a Public Hearing regarding that situation on Monday, December 10 at 6pm. The community will have informational events leading up to that meeting. [ Celebrity Activist Visit Saturday ]

Zoning ordinances can be established that run through a myriad of regulations as to how a parcel of land can be used. Often parcels are zoned with consideration of neighboring parcels. This is about having an urban plan that works for residents and businesses that satisfies needs and goals.

When it comes to "Urban Ag" as it is commonly referred, the notion of bringing large scale farming equipment into the city usually doesn't work. Residents don't want to wake in the morning to see a combine the size of their house throwing crop dust into the air as sunrise is breaking. Livestock also comes into the agriculture ordinance. On the periphery concern with the following has to be addressed:

  • Herbicide and Pesticide use
  • Irrigation and Watershed plans
  • Regulation of what crops can be grown
  • Taxation of produced commercial product
  • Opportunities for assistance in getting started and coaching/planning for existing farms/gardens
  • and oversight for all of these factors has to be addressed also

The ordinance is to establish regulations that permit urban agriculture to blend easily into our urban mode of living. It also spells out remedies through a course of actions when regulations aren't met.

Zoning is a key factor in setting property tax and potential value on property based on what it can produce. The Hantz deal is looking like a steal when they are able to purchase over 1,500 parcels of land for $300 each - that is what the current arrangements are stating. Comparing that price to entering the annual tax auction with an opening bid of $500 per parcel and bidding possibly taking the cost much higher. Hantz has also had the opportunity to get to know the neighborhood and begin plenty of planning in advance, something those using a tax auction to speculate on purchasing don't usually get to do.

Hope to see you at the meeting this evening!

Danny Glover Visit This Saturday

The battle for land justice heats up further with actor/activist Danny Glover speaking at a meeting this Saturday organized by Detroiters opposed to the proposed sale of more than 1500 City owned lots to John Hantz. (Hantz Group - a conglomerate of corporations).

The meeting will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012, 6:00-8:00pm at Timbuktu Academy of Science and Technology, 10800 E. Canfield, one block east of French Road, Detroit, 48214.

Spread the word!!! We need a heavy turnout by those living on
Detroit's lower east side.

"The hotter the battle, the sweeter the victory!"

P.S. Hantz Financial is facing a class action suit based on a $2.2 billion Ponzi Scheme.

Immediate Involvement Required

The attendance of City of Detroit residents and concerned was impressive on Tuesday, November 20.
At the last scheduled City Council meeting of 2012 the views expressed and information shared with City Council helped shape how the votes were made during that session. We hate to say it but the issues we're facing keep resurfacing like a Return of the Return of Dawn of the Living Dead. Your city needs your continued vigilance during this most holy season.

The State of Michigan and powers that would rather Detroiters just shut up and take their ill-fated medicine keep injecting that questionable life into the issues. We have to continue to stand together united.

Tuesday, December 4 - 9:55 am at CAYMC, 13th Floor

Detroit City Council meets to rescind their scheduled break until January 8 with three meetings of City Council of the Whole. The first meeting to take place at 10:00 am to work on Budget Deficit issues. This can and will include coercion to re-vote any issue previously voted, such as NO on Miller Canfield contracts, NO on DDOT contracts, NO on the EMA contract with DWSD, and stopping the Milestone Agreement from approval.

Opening Of Detroit website

Monday, December 10 - 6:00 pm at East Lake Baptist Church, 12400 E Jefferson at Connor

Public Hearing in the community regarding Hantz Woodlands (a subdivision of the conglomerate Hantz Group, originally known as Hantz Farms) acquisition of over 1,500 parcels of land [map] with the option to purchase surrounding land within 1 mile. This Land Grab is the largest speculation in Michigan history. Development plans have not clearly identified working with the community in the best interest of the residents in the areas impacted. The extended area of impact is from the Dequindre Cut, north of Warren, east to Grosse Pointe, and south to the Detroit River. Read much more depth through these references:

Tuesday, December 11 - 10:00 am at CAYMC, 13th Floor

Final City Council of the Whole meeting during which Hantz Group arrangement will be pressed to a vote. Likely if any issue has not yet been pressed to the will of those that would dissolve Detroit it will be brought into the meeting again.

Honor Our Vote

The people of Michigan demanded justice by repealing Public Act 4 on November 6

We told Governor Snyder that it was wrong to oppress local government through the Emergency Manager Law. That includes the Emergency Financial Manager Law which proceeded and was repealed March 16, 2011 to make way for Public Act 4.

Attorney General Bill Schuette delivered an opinion August 6, 2012 on the interpretation of how the repeals would be handled. However the people's opinion is not being considered by government, a government that was NOT set to rule OVER the people, but FOR the people. We will not rest until government sets justice straight by the desired will of the people. Tyrannical government was fought over 200 years ago - a "tea party" was held by revolutionaries to protest taxation without representation.

These repealed laws no longer have standing over the people. Reference Michigan Compiled Law section 8.4:
Effect of Repeal of Repealing Statute.
Whenever a statute, or any part thereof shall be repealed by a subsequent statute, such statute, or any part thereof, so repealed, shall not be revived by the repeal of such subsequent repealing statute.
This week the people begin moving your asserted government within our local jurisdictions OUT. We celebrate Veterans Day by honoring their fight for our rights. The rights of the people to be heard and demand justice through legislature and courts that listen to the people.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2012

On-air shows will have rallying calls to the public to join the actions coming up this week.

10:00 am Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Roy Roberts is served notice to quit. By noon we begin moving him out of the Fisher Building office.

Noon Rally at Fisher Building and in New Center Commons to evict Roy Roberts from Detroit Public Schools.

2:00 pm Financial Advisory Board meeting for the City of Detroit is being held one mile south at McGregor Conference Center on Wayne State University Campus, near the Law Library on Ferry Mall. We will march in solidarity from New Center to this meeting and serve notice to the FAB and others appointed through the Consent Agreement which has been protested by the people and was found in fault by Corporation Counsel.

Mayor's District 5 Community Meeting is Sept 27

District 5 is the next stop for Mayor Bing on his tour around the districts of the city to interact with the people and discover how well his administration is accomplishing its goals. We encourage those in the district to come forward during public comments to be heard, and the invitation is open to the public attending. Some of these meetings have been picked up by television crews, however a few had no coverage. Some meetings have been very heated and others more subdued.

The following press release is from the Mayor's Office yesterday, as of yet there hasn't been a poster for the meeting available online and we haven't seen one around Coleman A Young Municipal Building.
Update: A flyer from the Mayor's Office is at the bottom of this post.

Mayor Bing - Community Meeting Sept 13

Mayor Dave Bing will be holding his community meeting for District 4 as he visits each of seven districts around the city. As a citizen activist group we are encouraging the public to attend the meeting. This community meeting is for the Mayor and his staff to understand the needs of Detroiters throughout the city.

WHO:
Mayor Dave Bing and staff
WHAT: District 4 Community Meeting
WHEN: Thursday, September 13, 2012, starts at 7:00pm
WHERE: Charity Lutheran Church, 17220 Kelly Rd, Detroit 48224
FACEBOOK: Event Link

There will be a brief period likely from 6:50-7:05 when you'll be able to fill out a card requesting to speak during the public comments segment of the night. You should be offered 2 minutes to speak, although we have found 1 minute or 1.5 minutes is regularly offered. It is HIGHLY recommended those wishing to speak and find seating arrive by 6:45pm.

Prepare your presentation, deliver it direct to the point and cleanly. Ideally create an opportunity for interaction by the mayor and his staff. Targeted issues will be delegated to staff to manage. We need broad reaching change and that can be in the form of requesting audits, public documentation of results, and requesting conversational dialog that isn't happening at community meetings. Require open meetings and proper notice and publication of events offering public participation. Ask for public service announcements to appear where YOU will see them. Transparency of government is not coming from Mayor Bing's administration.

Mayor's Community Meetings

The above map also shows the declared resident locations of City Council members, seven of which will have to reside in a district to serve as its elected representative.

Mayor Bing - Community Meeting Aug 30

Mayor Dave Bing will be holding his community meeting for District 3 as he visits each of seven districts around the city. As a citizen activist group we are encouraging the public to attend the meeting. This community meeting is for the Mayor and his staff to understand the needs of Detroiters throughout the city.

Click here to download a copy of the flyer for the event.

WHO:
Mayor Dave Bing and staff
WHAT: District 3 Community Meeting
WHEN: Thursday, August 30, 2012, starts at 7:00pm
WHERE: Brenda Scott Middle School, 18440 Hoover St, Detroit MI 48205
FACEBOOK: Event link

There will be a brief period likely from 6:50-7:05 when you'll be able to fill out a card requesting to speak during the public comments segment of the night. You should be offered 2 minutes to speak, although we have found 1 minute or 1.5 minutes is regularly offered. It is HIGHLY recommended those wishing to speak and find seating arrive by 6:30pm.

Prepare your presentation, deliver it direct to the point and cleanly. Ideally create an opportunity for action by the mayor and his staff.

About the Location

Brenda Scott Middle School is one of 15 schools that the Educational Achievement Authority (EAA) is laying claim to pulling from Detroit Public Schools. It will be managed by Matchbook Learning. Emergency Manager Roy Roberts worked with Robert Bobb to establish the EAA, implementing it the 2012-13 school year with Detroit Public Schools the first pulled into the statewide district based on being Persistently Low Achieving schools on MEAP test scores.

Detroit School Board Meeting - SUPPORT NEEDED

This morning a press conference was called by Detroit Public Schools yet Roy Roberts, Emergency Manager was not present. Those attending were LaMar Lemons (Board President), John Telford (Interim Superintendent Elect), George Washington (Legal Counsel), David Murray, and Tawanna Simpson (Board members at large).

Discussion for the meeting revolved around the changing hands of control over Detroit Public Schools. After 11 years out of the past 13 of ruling Detroit Public Schools the State of Michigan doesn't want to let go. They feel there still remains a financial emergency to be managed.

Public Act 4 - Emergency Manager Law Referendum

On August 2nd Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the Repeal of Public Act 4 should be placed on the Nov 6, 2012 ballot to be decided by the people of the State of Michigan. During that hearing questions to John Pirich, the attorney representing the Secretary of State asking if he understood that Public Act 72 was no longer a law in effect seemed not to sink in. Through the last few minutes of the hearing he seemed genuinely confused by what Justice Young was asking.

When Public Act 4 was placed into law in 2011 it repealed Public Act 72, at that time. (NOT IN THE FUTURE, OR EVEN NOW - Public Act 72 is no longer a law.) According to MCL 8.4 once a law has been repealed it cannot be revived by repeal of the subsequent law that had it repealed. We are currently sitting with suspension of Public Act 4, which isn't yet repealed - however Public Act 72 is repealed and has been since 2011. Attorney General Bill Schuette and the Governor's Press Secretary Sarah Wurfel have been saying that Public Act 72 is the law that we are now using - the problem is that was REPEALED.

So there you have it - the story that you aren't going to get from the mainstream press who are using the words of the officials, we have to dig in and get facts and report those findings to you.
